Ying Wang Shen, Aged 54, of Shoreview Minnesota passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and loved ones on November 22, 2025. She was a beloved mother, wife, professor, mentor, and friend. Known for her warm smile, welcoming demeanor, and strong faith, she embodied kindness, strength, and generosity.
Born in Heze, China, she met her husband, John, in Beijing, with whom she shared 28 years of marriage. Together, they embarked to pursue their education in the United States where she obtained a Masters in Early Childhood Education from University of Georgia, a Masters in New Media from IUPUI, and a PhD in Instructional Technology from Indiana University. She brought her passion for education and mentorship into her work as a Professor of Education and Director of Technology and Assessment at University of Northwestern in St. Paul. She was a true educator, and saw her students and colleagues as family.
There are not enough words to describe her life and the impact her kindness, love, and faith had on others. Despite a diagnosis of Stage IV lung cancer in 2022, she fought bravely through countless rounds of chemotherapy while continuing to teach and embody true joy and love.
She is survived by her husband John, daughter Erin, son Matthew, niece Emily, older brother Wang Lei, and countless friends and loved ones.
A visitation service will be held on Saturday, November 29th from 10am-12pm at Roseville Memorial Chapel, 2245 Hamline Ave. N. Roseville. A memorial service will be held shortly after, from 1-2pm at Twin Cities Chinese Christian Church, located at 1752 Terrace Dr, Roseville, MN.
