Virginia was a lifelong member of Nativity Parish. She attended St. Joseph’s Academy. Virginia graduated in 1957 from St. Catherine University with a B.A. in French and Humanities. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and studied French in Poitiers, France 1957-58. After graduating she earned her M.A. in French from the University of Minnesota in 1963. Virginia had a long teaching career at Macalester College. She became a Professor in 1983. She earned her PhD in French from the University of Minnesota in 1974. While at Macalester College she was decorated by the French Government with the Ordre des Palmes Academiques in 1975. Virginia was the chair of the French Department from 1988-2000. She served as Associate Provost to the President in 1986-87 and she was Director of the French study abroad program 1989-1995. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Alliance Francaise of the Twin Cities 1992-2000.
Virginia’s other love was the Twin Cities Catholic Chorale. As a sophomore in high school, she sang in the Nativity Church Choir under the direction of Father Schuler. Later Monsignor Schuler founded the TCCC and Virginia became a founding member. She served as President of the TCCC for many years and was currently President Emeritus serving on the board in her later years. While residing at St. Therese of Woodbury, she published two books, “To Sing with the Angels” and “Sacred Music and Liturgy after Vatican II.” A book signing event for her took place in April of 2024 on the 50th Anniversary of the TCCC.
Virginia was a loyal member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. She served on the Board of Trustees of the St. Paul Seminary from 1990-2000. She was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
She will be greatly missed by her family and many dear friends and colleagues.

Schubert, Virgina A.
October 15, 1935 – January 26, 2025 (89 years old)
Virginia was born and raised in St. Paul, MN. She was a lifelong member of Nativity Parish. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy and the College of St. Catherine where she was a Phi Beta Kappa and earned a B.A. in French and Humanities. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and studied in Poitiers, France. She received her M.A. and PhD in French from the University of Minnesota. She was a Professor in the French Department for most of her years at Macalester College and served as Chair of the department from 1988-2000.
She was a dedicated teacher to her devoted to her students. Viginia developed friendships with many students and colleagues which lasted well after retirement.
Her other passion was the Twin Cities Catholic Chorale. She was a founding member and supporter along with the director Monseigneur Schuler. She was President of the Chorale for many years and active in fundraising.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Catherine Schubert. Survived by brother, Dr. Robert C. Schubert (Patricia), nieces, cousins, many dear friends and colleagues.
Mass of Christian Burial Friday February 14 at 10 am at the Church of St. Agnes, 535 Thomas Avenue, Saint Paul. Visitation one hour prior at the church. Private interment at Calvary Cemetery.
