Sandra Lee Matejka (née Wilson)
April 6, 1940 – December 12, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sandra Lee Matejka (née Wilson), who peacefully departed this life on December 12, 2025, at the age of 85. Sandra was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, whose love and devotion to her family, community, and profession will forever be remembered.
Sandra was born on April 6, 1940, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, to James and Gertrude Wilson. From a young age, she exhibited a deep compassion and nurturing spirit, which guided her to a long and fulfilling career in nursing.
In 1966, Sandra married the love of her life, Leonard Phillip Matejka. Together, they shared 35 beautiful years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and countless adventures before Leonard’s passing in 2001. Leonard was Sandra’s steadfast partner and soulmate, and their bond was a shining example of enduring love and partnership.
After earning her nursing degree, Sandra’s career included MacNeal Memorial Hospital, where she worked in pediatrics, caring for the youngest and most vulnerable patients with exceptional skill and tenderness. Her passion and dedication led her to LaGrange Memorial Hospital, where she became the Clinical Manager for the Nursery/Mother-Baby unit. In this role, Sandra was instrumental in mentoring nurses, supporting new mothers, and welcoming countless babies into the world. Her decades of service left an indelible mark on the lives of her colleagues, patients, and their families.
Sandra was the proud mother of two daughters, Michele Hagen (husband Brent) and Jennifer Sarver (husband Michael), who were the light of her life. Sandra cherished her role as a grandmother to her five granddaughters—Emily, Cassandra, Amanda, Sydney, and Keegan—and as a great-grandmother to Xander and Iris. Her family fondly remembers the countless ways she enriched their lives with her unwavering support and encouragement.
Sandra’s dedication to her family was matched by her passion for creating a warm and welcoming home. She delighted in making every holiday and milestone special. Her kindness and vibrant spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Sandra is survived by her daughters, Michele and Jennifer; her sons-in-law, Brent and Michael; her grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends. She is reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, Leonard, and other cherished loved ones who preceded her.
A private service will be held to honor Sandra’s incredible life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospitals in her memory.
Sandra Lee Matejka was a beacon of love and kindness, both in her personal life and her nursing career. She will be deeply missed, but her legacy of care, compassion, and devotion will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all those she touched.
