Rose Marie Vandal Ormberg
April 19, 1927 - August 31, 2025, age 98, of St. Paul, MN passed away peacefully at Carondelet Village.
Rose Marie was born in Bottineau, ND to parents Leonard and Estelle Vandal. She was the second oldest of 13 children and was raised on the family farm. Rose Marie attended a one room school house for her first eight years of schooling and graduated high school at Notre Dame Academy in Willow City, ND. After two years at the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, MN, Rose Marie taught grade school in Omemee, Overly, and Durbin, and then attended Minot State Teachers’ College in Minot, ND, where she received her diploma in 1949.
On June 20, 1950, Rose Marie married Hubert Ormberg. After living in North Dakota for a few years, the couple moved to New Ulm, MN, where they started raising their five children before moving to a farm in Nicollet County. Rose Marie and Hubert were married 53 years before Hubert passed away in Lake Havasu City, AZ, where the couple moved upon retirement.
While raising her children, Rose Marie continued her education part-time at Mankato State Teachers’ College and received her Education degree in 1967. Once her children were in school, Rose Marie taught elementary education at the Catholic and Public schools in New Ulm for over 30 years.
In 2004, Rose Marie moved to the Twin Cities to be near her family and moved to live at Carondelet Village in 2012.
Rose Marie showed her love in many ways, but she especially found joy in sewing, canning, cooking, and baking for her family. She also enjoyed family gatherings, gardening, sewing quilts, and playing cards–especially Bridge.
She is survived by her children, Colleen (Dan) Faber, Ronald, Kenneth Ornberg, Janice (Bill) Hamilton and Robert (Catie); 15 grandchildren - Eric Faber (Soraya), Sara (Joel) Walker, Michael Faber (Joanne Carter), Chad (Kate), Jessa (Aaron) Brixius, Brita (Evan) Palo, Emily, Grace, and Will Ornberg, Laura (Jason Dzurik) Hamilton, Hanna and Emma Hamilton, Colleen Hite (Harrison), Martin (Sarah), and Sean, 13 great grandchildren; sisters, Cecilia, Alice, Grace, brothers; Michael, Norman; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Hubert, parents and parents-in-law; brothers, Lawrence, Edward, Aime; sisters, Jeannie, Theresa, Helen, Marguerite; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
On behalf of Rose Marie’s family, a special thank you goes out to the staff of Carondelet Village and the team from Optage Hospice for all the love, care, and support they gave to Rose Marie.
A private family celebration of Rose Marie’s life is being planned. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in St. Paul, MN. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Maryknoll Sisters, P.O. Box 317, Maryknoll, NY 10545 or to the charity of your choice.
