Ronald "Ron" Bergum Obituary

Bergum

Ronald E.

Age 87

United States Marines

Korean War veteran

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Ron was born in St. Paul February 14, 1934 to Leo and Emma (Meyer)Bergum. He grew up on St Paul’s west side and attended St. Matthew’s Catholic School where apparently his academic focus was being the class clown and tormenting the nuns. According to his many stories he excelled at both. Always looking for adventure, at the age of 17 he enlisted in the Marines and served in the Korean War. He regarded his time in the Marines as one of his greatest experiences. When he returned from the Marines he lost his mother to cancer and thereafter became his father’s best pal. He was a member of the West St Paul Jaycee’s which he thoroughly enjoyed for many years. At the age of 30, he ended his bachelor days after his cousin Margaret introduced him to her friend, Angela Alfonso. They were married at Holy Redeemer Church in St Paul and soon moved to Inver Grove Heights where they were fortunate to raise their family among the best of neighbors and years of fun times with the neighborhood friends. Many a beer was shared with this group. Ron was in his element when there were friends around and never met a stranger. He enjoyed sports, hunting, golf, going to the cabin and traveling anywhere and everywhere. He especially loved duck hunting and the times he spent at the hunting shack in North Dakota with his friends Jim, Boots, Al, the Anderson family and later with his sons and grandson. He was fortunate to travel for his job in sales and enjoyed the time spent working on the road out in the western states. He never missed an opportunity to share a story of one of his adventures/misadventures or shenanigans. If you were in a room with him you would likely be laughing. He would not let you get away without trying to get a chuckle. Ron will be remembered by his family and friends for his sense of humor, love of fun, his loud laugh and for his stories.

Preceded in death by his parents, beloved brothers Andy (Ruby)and Jerry, brother-in-law Gerry Alfonso, father- and mother-in-law Dominic and Margaret Alfonso.

Ron is survived by his wife of 57 years Angela, children Cindy Bergum (Bill Schmechel), Lynn Schabacker (Jeff), Eric (Amy) Bergum, Mike (Laurie) Bergum. Grandkids, Matt (Steph), Jessica (Devon), Shelby, Taylor,Jaclyn, Andrew, C.J., Abby and Anthony, great grandsons, Charlie, Kai, and Owen, sister-in-law Shirley Bergum, brother- and sister in-law Dominic and Annette Alfonso.
