Ron died peacefully at home on Wednesday, November 19, 2025. He was born March 17, 1933, in St. Paul, MN, to Clement and Myrle Smith.


Ron was a graduate of St. Mark’s Grade School, St. Thomas Academy ‘51, the University of Notre Dame, and Notre Dame Law School. He was a member of the Ramsey County and Minnesota Bar Associations. He practiced law in St. Paul for 40+ years.


He married his wife, Mary (Joyce), and raised 6 children. Ron was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Ron enjoyed skiing and never missed a YMDA ski trip. He was an avid tennis player. Ron was involved in his community. He served as president of Catholic Charities, a member of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher, and served on the board of St. John’s University and also St. Peter’s Church.


He was preceded in death by his son, Ronnie Smith; his mother, Myrle; his father, Clement; and his only brother, Marshall. He is survived by his wife, Mary, and their children: Lisa Schoenberg (Patrick), Michele Kolar (Jim), Patrick Smith, Brian Smith (Jill), Katy Lynch (Jarrod), and Pam Smith. Ron has 19 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.


A mass will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Mendota on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at 11:00am, with a visitation beginning at 10:00am. Burial at Resurrection immediately following mass. Memorials to Catholic Charities, Visitation School, Our Lady of Peace Hospice, or St. Thomas Academy.
