Richard "Dick" Smith Obituary

Richard (Dick) E. Smith passed away on December 27, 2025, with his wife and daughter by his side.

Dick was born on July 2, 1942, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Eugene R. Smith and Mariella White Smith.

He graduated from Washburn Rural High School (1960), and received degrees from Washburn University (1964), Washburn School of Law (1968), and the University of Missouri School of Law (1974). He was a partner in a Topeka law firm and later a senior officer with The First National Bank of Topeka and Bank of America, from which he retired in 1998. He was a member of the Kansas Bar Association and Civitan International. His early and later years were spent on the family farm. Family, farming, the land, animals, nature, hiking, and his association with many friends were a constant source of enjoyment.

Dick married Elizabeth (Tish) Ferraro on April 24, 1971, in Topeka. She survives with daughter, Brooke S. Piper (Daniel), and grandchildren, Luke A. Piper and Thomas R. Piper; brother, Charles E. Smith (Charlene); nephew, Sean Smith (Stephanie); and niece, Beckey Kliewer (Jason); and their families.

Funeral Services will be held at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, located at 4030 Pilot Knob Road, Eagan MN, Friday, January 16, 2026. Visitation at 9:00 AM, Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM, followed by lunch. Interment will be at a later date. The funeral will be livestreamed at: https://www.youtube.com/@SJNChannel/streams.
