Maynard Jacobson Obituary

Maynard Edward Jacobson, formerly of Sunfish Lake, passed away at the age of 95 on June 21, 2026.

Maynard was born on July 16, 1930, in Hibbing, Minnesota, to Edward and Arline (Wahlberg) Jacobson. He graduated from South St. Paul High School, Gustavus Adolphus College, and the University of Minnesota Medical School.  After serving in the U.S. Navy as a physician, Maynard dedicated his career to the University of Minnesota Hospitals, where he was a Professor of Medicine, and the VA Medical Center, where he served as Chief of Staff.  He was a Fellow of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology and received the University of Minnesota Medical Foundation’s Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Maynard was a Renaissance man: physician, architect, artist, electrician, technophile.  He skied and sailed into his 80s, enjoyed researching his Swedish and Finnish genealogy, was passionate about improving healthcare in developing countries, was an ardent supporter of Gustavus, and adored his grandchildren.  He and his wife Elaine loved to travel, visiting over 100 countries across six continents, and they loved to be at their small cabin on Big Wood Lake.

Maynard was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Dorothy Belk, his stepson David Jampsa, and his wife of 43 years, Elaine Jacobson. He is survived by his children Scott (Alicia) Jacobson, Kimberly Jacobson, Myron (Catherine) Jacobson, and Marcia (Mike) Johnson; stepdaughters Carole (Jim) Southam and Barbara (Kevin Funfar) Jampsa; grandchildren Ashley (Ben) Lind, Jamie (Matt) DeMarco, Ryan (Lindsay) Southam, Ben Johnson, Ella Johnson, Quinn Jacobson, and Lydia Jacobson; and great-granddaughter Ellery Lind.

A funeral service will be held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church (700 Snelling Avenue South, St. Paul) at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 16, with visitation at 9 a.m., luncheon following the service, and burial at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lyngblomsten Foundation.
