Mary Ellen ‘Mimi’ Vaughn died at age ninety-eight on Thursday, October 9th in Transitional Care at Carondelet Village in Saint Paul. Born Mary Ellen Madden to Elizabeth and Dr. John F. Madden on May 29th, 1927, the oldest of three children (John 1930-1951 and Peter 1936-2021), she was a lifelong resident of Saint Paul. A 1945 graduate of Convent of the Visitation School, she attended Carleton College and the University of Minnesota before marrying Dr. C. Gordon Vaughn in 1957. They raised three boys: John of Stillwater (Darcy Miner), Charles of Minneapolis (d. 2014, partner Rod Sima), Peter of Lakeville, Connecticut (Hiram Williams) and one grandchild, Conor, of Somerset, Wisconsin (Alison Gau).
She maintained many close childhood friendships throughout her entire life and well into old age with unflagging interest. Sustained by a well-developed sense of humor, curiosity informed by a keen insight into the world, innate civility and kindness, she carried on being herself until she died.
Dearly loved by many, Mimi’s death is a great loss to her children of a lovely and loving mother. A gathering will be held at Montcalm Apartments in Saint Paul, 525 Lexington Parkway South, PH Community Room on Tuesday, November 4th, 2025 at 3pm.
