Mary was born to Edward and Jacquelyn Gurney of Shoreview, MN in 1960; the fourth of five children. She graduated from Frank B. Kellogg High School in Little Canada, MN, class of 1978. Mary married her soul mate, Lawrence (Larry) Maurus, in 1983. Together they bought a house in St Paul, MN, where they lived for 17 years before purchasing her childhood home from her mom and returning to Shoreview for the rest of her years. Mary had a special talent for baking and decorating cakes, and happily shared her gift with many. She worked in a handful of bakeries during her career, spending most of her time at Buttercream Wedding Cakes & Desserts, where she decorated a wedding cake for Prince. She dabbled in bookkeeping, both as a part-time and a full-time vocation, but creating pastry was her true calling. Mary and Larry had one child, Emily, and the proud mom enjoyed many weekends cheering her daughter on at softball games until the sun set on Emily’s athletic exploits. From there, Larry and Mary spent hundreds of hours and hundreds of thousands of miles on their several Harley-Davidsons; making many dozens of friends and countless memories along the way … it was a true joy for them both. Although they both loved to go on camping trips with Emily and extended family to Mille Lacs Lake throughout their 38-year marriage, they enjoyed nothing better than taking two or three weeks off work, hopping on the bike and seeing where the road led them. She often echoed the bikers’ mantra: “it’s not the destination, it’s the journey.” Predeceased by her father, Edward, Mary is survived by her mother, Jackie Gurney; her husband, Larry; her daughter, Emily Reid (Chris); her four siblings: Theresa Gurney (Mary McCormick); Tom Gurney (Bonnie); Kate Dean (Don); Jackie Spreigl (Tom); many nieces and nephews, and even more great-nieces and great-nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Odilia Catholic Church (3495 Victoria St. North, Shoreview) with Father Tim Tran officiating. Visitation will start at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Fort Snelling Cemetery at a future date to be determined by the family.
