Marie Conlin

Marie Sauro Conlin, 96, born March 21, 1926, in St. Paul, MN, died May 30, 2022. 

Preceded in death by parents, Daniel and Josephine (Marzitelli) Sauro; husband, Robert E. Conlin, Sr.; siblings, Daniel Sauro and Elizabeth Waschbusch; and sister-in-law, Audrey Sauro. Survived by children, Robert Jr. (Mesma), Peter, Mary Jo Kirschbaum (Mark), Margaret Conlin-Duevel (James), and Daniel (Nicole); grandchildren, Megan Garrett (Josh), Joseph Kirschbaum (Lauren), Timothy Kirschbaum (Katie), Sara Duevel, David Duevel (Kiley), Ann Duevel, and Josephine Sandquist; and eight great-grandchildren. Survived also by brother, Thomas Sauro (Kathy); brother-in-law, Edward Waschbusch; and many nieces and nephews.  

Marie received a B.A. from the University of St. Catherine and an M.A. from the University of St. Thomas. At various times during her teaching career she was on the faculty at the University of St. Catherine, and high schools Derham Hall and Visitation Convent. She was a member of the American Association of University Women for 75 years. After retiring from teaching she served as an administrative assistant at Catholic Charites. This latter position completed a circle that began in 1949 while attending a summer course at Columbia University in New York City, during which time she met and worked with Dorothy Day.   

Marie had a deep appreciation for theater and music, especially opera. For many years in her early life she was the organist at Holy Redeemer, Assumption, and St. Rose of Lima parishes.  In her later years she and husband Bob were actively involved in the diaconate community of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

For their kindness, the family extends its gratitude to Marie’s niece Diane and her husband Ernie Jadwinski, and family friend Paul Herb.   

Mass of Christian Burial at Lumen Christi Church in St. Paul on Saturday June 18 at 11:00. Visitation at the church one hour prior to the funeral.  Burial at Calvary Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to The Dorothy Day Residence in St. Paul c/o Catholic Charities.
