Margaret Ann was born and raised in the Cathedral Hill neighborhood of Saint Paul, Minnesota. She attended the Cathedral Grade School, Saint Joseph’s Academy, and achieved a B.A. in Library Science at the College of Saint Catherine’s. Upon graduation from Saint Kate’s, Marge worked as a librarian for the Minneapolis Public Library.
Marge was very proud of her Irish heritage. As an only child, her extended family were the Stephens family cousins of Erin Prairie, Wisconsin. Marge spent her childhood summers staying with Aunt Laura and Uncle Cody on their farm in Hammond, Wisconsin. Marge was immensely proud of her mother and father, Margaret and Neal Griffin, who were both involved with Marge and Dick’s family.
While attending Saint Kate’s, Marge met her future husband Richard (Dick) Roth. As they were dating, Dick was deployed to Korea. During this time, they wrote to each other every day. Dick was wounded in battle and returned home to continue his courtship with Marge. They married on June 11th, 1955 at the Cathedral of Saint Paul. Since Marge was a member of the Cathedral choir, the entire choir sang for their wedding.
Marge and Dick moved to Lake Street on the East Side of St. Paul and started raising their family. All of the neighbors on the block became life-long friends. Marge is the second to last survivor of that generation of the Lake Street crew.
In 1960, Marge and Dick moved to a bigger house in Battle Creek on the East Side of Saint Paul. All of their children went to Saint Pascal Baylon School and Hill-Murray High School.
Marge and Dick built a cabin on Shell Lake, Wisconsin, in 1972. For the past 53 years, thecabin has become a family retreat and heirloom. Over the years, there have been many cherished memories with family and friends.
Marge was active in the Hill-Murray Mothers Club. While there, she became good friends with members of the Christian Brothers: Brother Martin Sellner and Brother Francis Carr.
When the children were older, Marge returned to work at the Minnesota Historical Society. She worked as a tour guide and later as a gift shop manager for 18 years at the Alexander Ramsey House.
Shortly after Dick retired, he became ill and passed away in 1992 in the presence of his family. Marge continued to live at their home for the next 8 years.
Marge moved to Connemara and resided there for 20 years. She then moved to Oak Meadows Senior Living and lived there for about 6 years.
Marge is survived by her grandchildren: Rebecca, Heidi, Lance, Shannon, Megan, Isaac, Jacob, Luke, Griffin, Emma, and Melanie; great-grandchildren: Elijah and Mabel.
Marge’s grandkids were her pride and joy. She remained actively present in each of their lives up to her very last day here on earth. She is now interceding for her children, grandkids, great-grandkids, and many loved ones.
Marge’s children would like to extend their deepest thanks to the staff at Oak Meadows, Regions Hospital, and Marian of St. Paul Cerenity Senior Care with Health Partners Hospice for all the wonderful care they provided for their mother. Marge’s children would also like to thank Marge’s daughters-in-law and son-in-law for their loving presence and care for Marge over the years.
