Louis Bushard Obituary

Lou lived with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis for 8 years with grace, dignity and tenacity. He was a font of knowledge, an independent thinker, and honest to a fault. He loved his family and was a true believer of The Constitution. He was a staunch conservative and Gopher fanatic (he could tell you the score of the Minnesota/ Wisconsin football game in 1963).

Louis Bernard Bushard passed away on March 12, 2024. Born in New Ulm, MN, January 12, 1943 to Clem and Mary Bushard, the family moved to St Paul in 1951 and Lou was forever “a Marker.” After graduation from Cretin HS in 1961, he attended the University of Minnesota where he received his Bachelor of Mathematics Degree in 1965, Master of Science in Mathematics in 1967, and PhD in Mathematics in 1970. During these years, a redhead from North Dakota moved into “the hood” and they stole glances at one another in church; Maureen wearing gloves and cute hats and he, just plain handsome. They finally met, dated for 3 years and married July 9, 1966. After graduation, they moved to Fargo, ND, where he taught Math at NDSU for 2 ½ years and proudly mentored a Master’s student through his thesis.

In December of 1972 they adopted a beautiful baby boy, Justin. In 1973, Lou received a National Research Council Postdoctoral Grant at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and off they moved to Dayton, Ohio, in 1973. He worked in the Aerospace Research Laboratories and he always said that was his favorite job ever. His next job was at Babcock and Wilcox in Alliance, OH, where he was a Senior Research Mathematician for a little over 1 ½ years. Then in 1976, wanting to get back closer to home, he worked for Cray Research in Chippewa Falls, WI, where he worked with Seymour Cray as a Senior Logic Designer. While living in Eau Claire, they adopted a baby sister for Justin in 1977, and named her Casey. 1979 brought them back to the Twin Cities for a job at Sperry Univac where he was a Computer Engineer.

When the children were out of the nest, Lou wanted a new challenge so he went to work for IBM in Rochester, MN, in 1996. While there, he was the lead engineer on game chips for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. In 2001, he moved to Austin, TX, for 2 years to work on the Xbox 360 and Maureen visited him periodically. While there, he met people from Germany, Japan, and around the world whom he valued for their intelligence and interesting backgrounds. Throughout his career, Lou authored 12 publications and was an inventor on 17 patents. He retired for a short time in 2009 and then went back to work as a contractor for IBM on a temporary basis for a year. During retirement, he tutored math at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, which he enjoyed thoroughly.

Lou and Maureen traveled often for Gopher football and basketball. They enjoyed visiting all 50 states, Europe, Puerto Rico, and New Zealand. Other highlights include an Alaskan cruise, a European River Cruise, and an especially favorite one with his family, a Disney Cruise in 2019 that created many wonderful memories.

Humorous to the end, Lou leaves his loving wife, Maureen (née Morrissey) of nearly 58 years, children Justin (Heather), Casey (Amber Kiel), and grandsons Owen and Liam. He also leaves his siblings Clete, Catherine, Larry (Angelinas), Bobby, Terrance and Mary Ann; brother-in-law Michael Morrissey (Sue); sister-in-law Mary Finley (Joe); and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Clem and Mary, sisters Pat Boland and Sharon Bushard, brother-in-law Jack Boland, sister-in-law Sandy Bushard, and Granddawg Madison.

Our family wishes to thank Dr. Kirstin Brown, a bright spot on this long journey, Michelle, Dawn, Dr. Wong, Claire Hughes, Allie, Sarah, and Morgan. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Center of the American Experiment, Upper Midwest Law Center, or Our Lady of Peace Hospice.
