Neitge, John Wendel, 63, died of leukemia on Thursday, November 17, 2022, at his home in Woodbury, Minnesota.

John was born December 21, 1958, in Mankato, Minnesota, to Mary Ellen Wendel Neitge How and John Robert Neitge. He grew up in Mankato, where he was known by the nickname Fred, and graduated from Mankato East High School in 1978. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1982 with a Bachelor of Art’s degree in theater.

John began his career in 1982 at KSTP TV, St. Paul, Minnesota. He worked in various newsroom positions, including editor and photographer, which he loved. In 1994 John shifted careers to financial advising with Ameriprise Financial in Woodbury. The investment markets seemed to make sense to him, and he greatly enjoyed helping clients for more than 20 years. John was a member of the Woodbury Chamber of Commerce and served on the board of directors and as chair.

In 1997 John married the love of his life, Barbara K. Hein of Ipswich, South Dakota. John and Barb loved to travel and took many fabulous trips around the world as a couple and with family.

John was an avid golfer, playing competitive club golf at the University of Minnesota and Prestwick golf clubs.

John was an active volunteer. After his retirement from Ameriprise, he helped introduce young people to the outdoors through his volunteer work with the nonprofit Wilderness Inquiry. Barb shared John’s love of the outdoors. They were active members of the Superior Hiking Trail Association for more than 20 years. They helped build, clear, and maintain the hiking trail along Minnesota's North Shore.

John also served on the board of directors of the Sally Manzara Nature Center in Lake Elmo, Minnesota, and spent many hours volunteering on nature center projects.

John was an avid reader and enjoyed crafts, including spoon carving, a hobby he took up after retirement.

John is survived by his wife, Barbara of Woodbury; sisters, Catherine Neitge and Mary (Tom) Hoffman, of Mankato and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Sally Manzara Nature Center, Wilderness Inquiry, Superior Hiking trail or to the donor’s choice.  Private services will be planned in the future.
