Joanne Haag Obituary

Joanne Edith Haag, born in1929, St. Paul, MN, died peacefully on March 7, 2026. Preceded in death by her parents, William J. Haag and Edith Chard Haag, Joanne is survived by her sister, Ruth Haag Brombach, St. Paul, and brother, William (Bill) Haag and spouse, Margaret, Washington, MO, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, one great-great-niece and one great-great-nephew, cousins and friends.

Joanne graduated from Derham Hall High School in 1947, St. Catherine University in 1951, lived as a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Paul, for two years, completed a year of study at the Sorbonne University in Paris, and received a master’s degree from the University of Southern California in 1966. She taught high school French and English in Morris, MN, West St. Paul, an Air Force Dependents’ School in Morocco, and at schools, including Beverly Hills High School, in Southern California.

In a mid-life career change, Joanne completed a law degree at University of California Law San Francisco in 1978. She subsequently practiced immigration law in Northern California. After retiring from the practice of law, Joanne returned to live in St. Paul in 2017.

Active in both political and professional groups associated with her work, Joanne believed strongly in civil rights, feminist values, peace and justice. After returning to St. Paul, she joined friends from the community of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in work for the community’s social justice ministries.

Joanne has donated her remains to the University of Minnesota Anatomy Bequest Program.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 28, at 10:30 am at O’Halloran & Murphy, 575 South Snelling Avenue, St. Paul. Visitation is 9:30 am.

Memorials can be directed to St. Catherine University, Edith and William Haag Memorial Scholarship, or the donor’s choice.
