Jim passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 2, 2026, at Our Lady of Peace Hospice with his loving partner Peggy at his side. In his last days, he was supported and surrounded by family and friends.
Born on July 21, 1941, to James and Ruth (Christensen) McMahon in St. Paul, Minnesota, he was the only boy among five siblings. He later had two daughters with his former spouse Katherine Tilton. Jim loved being surrounded by the women in his life. He attended Holy Spirit Elementary School and proudly graduated from Cretin High School and St. Thomas College where he formed lifelong friendships. At Cretin, he forged bonds that lasted decades.
Jim worked as a financial planner for many years at North Star Resource Group. While he took great pride in his work, his true calling was being a great partner, father, grandfather, cousin, uncle, and friend - that is where he truly excelled. Unlike his golf game.
Proud of his Irish heritage, Jim especially looked forward to celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. He loved marching in the parade proudly representing the McMahon Clan. He was also an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching games and attending them live. His favorites included the Minnesota Wild, Minnesota Vikings, the University of Minnesota, and University of Notre Dame athletics.
Jim enjoyed a good joke, a hot plate of spaghetti, potatoes in any form, a cool pint of Guinness, and Irish whiskey on the rocks. Anyone who knew Jim also knew he cared deeply about his appearance. Clothes, shoes and especially the hair. His impeccable sense of style kept him looking sharp, even while mowing the grass (which no one could do better).
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ruth McMahon. He is survived by his loving partner, Peggy Meyer; his devoted daughters, Kelly and Katie; his sisters Pat Schrantz, Colleen (David) Howland, Mary Kay (Mike) Fitzgerald, and Rose Huck; Peggy’s daughter, Julie (Brett) Tyren; grandchildren Bridget Adams, Seamus and Charlotte McKenna, and Lindsey and McKenna Tyren; and many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him greatly.
Jim’s family is deeply grateful to the many health care providers who cared for him, especially during the past two years.
May his memory be a blessing, and may there always be a good story told, a good game on, and a good pint raised in his honor.
