James F. Thomas, age 89

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, businessman, veteran, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on June 30, surrounded by his loving family and after a heartfelt Frank Sinatra sing-along. He found comfort in the hope of being reunited in Heaven with those who went before him, especially his parents, his sister Peggy, his daughter Nanci, his grandson Tommy, and many dear friends.

Jim was born in Saint Paul and adopted by Marie and Clarence Thomas. He always said he had “won the lottery” when they welcomed him into their family. He was raised on Dayton Avenue in a neighborhood filled with “free-range” children, many of whom became his lifelong friends. A spirited and energetic young man, he attended St. Mark’s School before graduating from St. Thomas Academy in 1955.

Following graduation, Jim proudly served his country in the US Navy, spending two years in Japan, Hong Kong, and aboard the USS Midway. Family members smile when recalling that he may have stretched the truth once or twice in order to be granted leave to visit his sweetheart back home.

After honorable discharge, he married the love of his life, Judy, and together they began building their family. While attending St. Thomas College, Jim joined his father at Rosedale Pharmacy. After his father’s untimely passing, he converted the business into Thomas Liquors.

Jim was a thoughtful businessman whose quiet determination, integrity, and strong work ethic earned him the respect of everyone around. Equally important was his generous nature. He believed in investing in people and positively influenced the lives of many employees by encouraging their personal and professional success. Working alongside family members from multiple generations, Jim was content to keep things running smoothly, often from the back room, while others carried on the friendly conversations that made Thomas Liquors such a welcoming place in the community.

Throughout his life, Jim faced significant health challenges with remarkable grace. He accepted each obstacle without complaint, finding strength in his faith and gratitude for each day. As declining vision gradually limited his ability to enjoy travelling, following the stock market, and playing gin rummy with friends, he found joy in praying the daily rosary, listening to sports, and making phone calls to loved ones. Nothing brought him greater happiness than his children and grandchildren, and he cherished every visit with them. His steadfast faith remained a source of comfort and strength throughout his life.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Judy; his children Susan (Peter), Mike (Tammy), Bob (Tammy), Katie (Tony); 10 beloved grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren, with 2 more expected this fall.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Nativity of Our Lord on Monday, July 20th at 11am with visitation beginning at 9:30am.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Our Lady of Peace Hospice are preferred.
