Hugh McElroy Obituary

Hugh C. McElroy

4/27/38 – 8/12/25,

Hugh Charles McElroy passed away peacefully on August 12, 2025, after a long illness. Preceded in death by son, Daniel; parents, Robert and Joan McElroy; brother, Bob McElroy and sister-in-law, Carol McElroy. Survived by son, Matthew; grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews and many good friends. Hugh was a Saint Mark’s boy growing up in the Midway district of Saint Paul, MN. He attended Cretin High School, participated in a number of sports and was voted most athletic during his four years there. Upon graduation, Hugh attended Nazareth Hall, and obtained a philosophy degree. Hugh then launched his career with the 3M company in international marketing, and completed an over 30 yr job history with the company. After retiring from 3M, Hugh pursued a life of volunteering. He traveled to Guatemala and worked with NPH which served impoverished children. Hugh was among the recipients of the Kare 11 “Those Who Serve Award” honoring those who gave their time and energy for others. Having spent time in Central America Hugh became aware of the disadvantages that young girls had in areas of education, development, and opportunities. With great passion and energy, he established a foundation, Luminaria in Guatemala, which housed at risk adolescent girls, and provided an environment of formation and education. This foundation lives on, that is his legacy and that was where his heart resided. A special thanks to Our Lady of Peace Hospice whose compassionate care and respect were evident throughout Hugh’s stay. Their kindness will not be forgotten. Also, thank you to the Marvella assisted-living staff and the treasured friends he met there. Mass of Christian Burial 11AM, Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church (1938 Stanford Ave., St. Paul). Visitation 5-8PM, Tuesday, Aug. 19, at O’Halloran and Murphy Funeral Home (575 Snelling Ave. S., St. Paul). In lieu of flowers, donations to Luminaria Foundation and/or Our Lady of Peace Hospice are appreciated.
