Age 88 of Afton and Woodbury, died peacefully on December 17, 2025. Gene was born in St. Paul on December 27, 1936, to Peter R. Galatowitsch and Katherine Gubasta Galatowitsch, the youngest of five children. He attended school at St. Agnes K-12, and earned advanced degrees from St. Cloud State, Mankato State, and the University of Minnesota. Gene married Emily Kathleen Costello at the Cathedral of St. Paul on August 13, 1966. He and Emily had three children: Nancy, Timothy, and Jeffrey. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force Reserves, and with the help of the G.I. Bill Gene earned his Ed.S. from the University of St. Thomas. Gene worked in the Saint Paul Public Schools for over 40 years, first as a science teacher, and then as an elementary school principal for the majority of his career. One of the highlights of his career was partnering with Augsburg College to implement the Paideia Program at the former Monroe Community School. He was a charismatic, thoughtful, and highly respected leader. Gene led with humor, compassion, creativity, and respect- while calling upon his incredible depth of experience and wisdom. In his free time Gene enjoyed golfing, farming, breakfasts with his brothers, traveling to see his children, family vacations across Canada, and exploring the backroads of MN and WI with Emily. He is preceded in death by his wife, Emily Kathleen Galatowitsch (nee Costello), father Peter R. Galatowitsch, mother Katherine Galatowitsch (nee Gubasta), sister Betty, brothers Kenneth, John and Peter W. Gene is survived by his children Nancy Joan-Kim (Paul Tillman), Timothy Ivan and Jeffrey Jin-Hwan and many other loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Thank you to the loving and caring staff at Regions Hospital. Public visitation 4-7pm Monday, December 22, 2025 at O'Halloran and Murphy Funeral Home (575 S Snelling Ave., St. Paul), ph 651-698-0796. Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday, December 23, 2025 at 12pm with visitation 1 hour prior at the Cathedral of Saint Paul. Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Cathedral Foundation, c/o the Cathedral of Saint Paul.
