Ellen Rieder
January 19, 1940 – April 19, 2026
Ellen (Eileen) Scanlon Rieder, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister passed away peacefully on April 19, 2026. She was born on January 18, 1940, in Tarbert, County Kerry, Ireland, the seventh of thirteen children. Her early life in Ireland shaped her strong sense of family, resilience, and devotion to faith that remained with her throughout her life.
In 1959, Eileen moved to England to pursue her calling as a nurse. In 1963, she immigrated to the United States and made her home in St. Paul, Minnesota, where she worked as a labor and delivery nurse. In 1965, Eileen married Anton Rieder and together, they raised three children. Eileen was a devoted mother and later a proud and loving grandmother to six grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense joy.
A devoted Catholic throughout her life, Eileen’s faith was a guiding force and source of strength. She lived her beliefs through service and love for others. Eileen will be remembered by her family, friends and “Hood” ladies for her love of Ole and Lena jokes, her jam and scones, her dismal golf game, and her never ending love for Ireland. She is preceded in death by her husband, Toni. Eileen is survived by her three children, Michael (Becky) Rieder, Angela (Steven) Commers, and Christian (Katie) Rieder, and her beloved grandchildren: Mary Kate, Bridget, and Nora Commers, and William, Claire, and Johanna Rieder.
A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Peter’s Church, in Mendota Heights, on Thursday, May 21, 2026. Visitation begins at 10:00 with mass at 11:00 AM. Lunch to follow.
