Edna Ulrich Obituary

Edna Hildegard Ulrich, 61, passed away on November 29, 2020 in Maplewood, MN. She was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada on November 2, 1959 to Arnold and Selma (Assenheimer) Lamers.

She graduated from Central High School in St. Paul where she was second in her class (receiving an award for perfect attendance) and was in the 1977 edition of the Society of Distinguished American High School Students. Edna then earned her Secretarial degree from St. Paul Vocational Technical Institute. She met the love of her life, David, at a prayer group they both attended, and they were married in 1982 at Central Lutheran Church.

David and Edna lived in St. Paul, Emily, and Two Harbors, MN before moving back to St. Paul in 2015. Edna was a devoted homemaker in her kids’ early lives and volunteered often for their school. After moving to Two Harbors, she held positions with The Lake Bank (working her way up from Teller to Vice President of New Technologies), Sonju Motors, Miller-Dwan Foundation, and the City of Duluth in the Department of Planning and Zoning (receiving the Employee of the Year award).

Edna had a beautiful, infectious smile that lit up a room. She had a deep love for God that was reflected in the love, care, and concern she so readily and easily gave to others. Edna was a loving, devoted wife and mother who was happiest when spending time with those she loved, whether it was taking a family walk around Lake Superior, meeting her best friends for dinner, or traveling to and hosting family reunions. She had a passion for reading and even published her own children’s book, “The Wonderful Changeable Magic Tricycle”, inspired by her son John. Her other interests included gardening, cooking German food, hiking, birdwatching, playing hearts, reading the Sunday paper, attending all her kids’ activities, and being with her grandchildren.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents, Arnold and Selma Lamers; parents-in-law, Louis and Betty (Garton) Ulrich; brothers-in-law James Ulrich and Dr. Carl O’Neal Page; and nephews Jason Fransen and Max Ulrich.

Surviving relatives include her husband of 38 years, David Ulrich; children John Ulrich of Duluth, MN; Laura (Rob) Brickweg of Richfield, MN; Daniel Ulrich of New Richmond, WI; and Rachel (Ben) Babcock of Eagan, MN; grandchildren Isabelle, RJ, Eloisa, Vivienne, Grace, Milena, Leo, Walter, and Vincent; siblings Irmbert Lamers, Ronald (Sonja) Lamers, Rita (Paul) Frenz, Arnold (Cheryl) Lamers, and David (Leatha) Lamers; siblings-in-law Barbara Page, Ruth (Bob) Fransen, Kathleen Ulrich, and John Ulrich; and her many more extended family of aunts, cousins, nephews, and nieces.

The family would like to extend their immense gratitude to Maplewood Care Center for the excellent care they gave Edna, as well as to everyone who visited, especially her sister Rita and Tante Inge for all their love.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the immediate family is having a private funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Volunteers of America or the Miller-Dwan Foundation.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
