Donald Zibell Obituary

Zibell, Donald F. (Don), age 87 of Arden Hills, on March 29, 2024. Survived by wife of 56 years, Luella; daughter Deanne and son-in-law Christopher Weber of Northfield; grandchildren Anna and Thomas Weber; brother Leslie (Julie) Zibell of Lake City; and nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents Anna and Otto E., brother Richard, and nephew John. Don was born on February 13, 1937 and grew up in Roseville. He was in the first graduating class of Alexander Ramsey High School and attended St. Olaf College before graduating from the University of Minnesota. He earned a JD from William Mitchell College of Law and passed the CPA exam shortly thereafter, becoming the youngest CPA/attorney in the state in 1964. During law school he began working for Minneapolis accounting firm Boulay & Co.; later he became a partner and the firm's name was changed to Boulay, Heutmaker, Zibell & Co. (BHZ). Don spent his entire career, which spanned almost 30 years, at BHZ (now Boulay). He helped establish The Residence (now a part of Lutheran Social Services), Minnesota’s first group home for people with developmental disabilities. Don was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, a member of the Minnesota Society of Certified Public Accountants, a founding member of the Roseville Central Park Foundation, and a past president of the Roseville Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. Don served on the boards of Roseville State Bank, Community Resource Bank, the Lyngblomsten Foundation, the Ramsey County Library Foundation, and was a member of the Board of Trustees at William Mitchell. In 2007, Don and Lu were recognized as grand marshals for the Rosefest parade, and in 2019 they were given the Anna Quale Fergstad Award for Distinguished Service at the Lyngblomsten President’s Dinner. In addition, Don was named as one of Minnesota Jaycees’ Ten Outstanding Young Men, selected as an Alumni of Notable Achievement for the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, and chosen as one of William Mitchell’s “100 Who Made a Difference” for their centennial. Thanks to the wonderful staff at the Gables at Johanna Shores for their compassionate care during the last few months.
