David L. Weidt, 73, St. Paul Minnesota, died January 13, 2025 in Saint Paul.
David was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He graduated from Edina High School in 1969 and then the University of Minnesota In Duluth . An avid reader, from an early age, David was a good student who found law school “easy”. He received his JD from Hamline university in 1980.
He was passionate about many things, including politics and justice for the underdog. His chosen field of law was representing clients who were struggling to get payments from their insurance companies for housefires and other catastrophes. He was especially proud of a case in which the Minnesota supreme court ruled in favor of his client for her injuries in a car accident.
David and his family enjoyed the outdoors. David loved snowmobiling with his son Alex. He was particularly proud of his daughter, Gladys’s ski racing accomplishments. He attended all of her races, was President of the ski team Association and encouraged her to spend her high school years part-time in Colorado to further improve her ski racing. Gladys says “he was an incredible dad“.
The family also enjoyed their cabin at Chub Lake spending easy days, canoeing, and taking walks. His continual love of reading included multiple daily newspapers, books, and listening to books on Audible.
He met his wife, Jerri, in October 2012. They were both simultaneously “smitten” and enjoyed spending their time together, biking, canoeing, rollerblading, cross-country skiing, enjoying David‘s cooking and listening to live music. David surprised his siblings by also becoming a great lover of animals, thanks to the enjoyment he took chauffeuring Jerri to veterinary house calls.
David loved high school hockey, and was a big fan of Duluth East. He chauffeured Jerri to many high school hockey games and especially the state tournament in March every year.
David was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at Mayo Clinic in February 2022. In 2024 began a heartbreakingly fast decline in health due to Alzheimer’s. He died at United Hospital in St. Paul, January 13, 2025. His family was with him at the end.
He leaves behind his wife, Jerri Smith, his daughter, Gladys Weidt, sister, Vicki Nelson, his brothers Tom Weidt and Jim Weidt, sisters-in-law, Nancy Weidt and Kim Weidt, and seven nieces and nephews. David was sadly preceded in death by his brother, Joe Weidt, and his son Alex Weidt.
