David Larsen Obituary

David T. Larsen passed away December 30, 2021, surrounded by his immediate family.  He was born October 19, 1948, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD to Theodore and Corrine (Jacobsen) Larsen.  Dave, the youngest of five siblings, grew up on a family farm near Wakonda, SD.  In 1966, he graduated from Wakonda High School Class and in 1970, graduated from South Dakota State University (SDSU).  While attending SDSU, Dave joined ROTC and after graduation became a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army.  He then completed a Field Artillery basic officer course in Ft. Sill, OK and attended helicopter pilot school in Ft. Wolter, TX and Ft. Rucker, AL.  After receiving his wings, he spent three years at Ft. Benning, GA flying helicopters with the 121st AHC. Following his Army discharge, he pursued a career with Ziegler Inc as a salesman of Caterpillar Earthmoving & Ag Equipment for the Marshall, MN branch.  After forty years, Dave retired from Ziegler Inc as a territory manager in 2014.

While in flight school, David married the love of his life, Margaret Cwach, on December 28, 1971, in Yankton, SD.  They are blessed with two wonderful children Chad and Katie.

Dave was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans, NRA, RMEF, and Habitat Partner of RMEF.  In addition, Dave spent many years as an active member of the Minnesota Freemasons, Zuhrah Shriners, Scottish Rites, and a member of St. Stephen’s Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher.

Dave enjoyed traveling, hunting, shooting/collecting guns, playing cards, and family.  Over the years, there were many hunting trips with friends and family including annual SD prairie dog hunts.  He enjoyed visiting his children and grandchildren, staying in hotels, and taking the grandchildren to the swimming pool.

After retirement, Dave & Maggie enjoyed driving trips throughout the United States.  In 2019, after a forty-four year lapse, Dave flew a beloved Huey in Logan, WV.

He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.  He was a gentle giant and a family pillar who enjoyed a nice meal, a nightly dish of ice cream, and spending time with loved ones.  His quick wit, love, wisdom, and guidance is deeply missed.

Dave is preceded in death by his parents, brother Don Larsen, sisters Linda Larsen and Dorothy Borah, brother-in-law Arvid Johnson. He is survived by his loving wife Margaret; son Chad (Liz) Larsen, and their three children Bennett, Rory, & Zoey Larsen of Woodbury, MN; daughter Katie (Jamasen) Parham Waukesha, WI; sister Ann Johnson Marshall, MN; sister-in-law Lois Larsen Minneapolis, MN; brother-in-law Ken Borah McKinney, TX; nephews; nieces; and extended family.
