Paul A. Schons

Schons. Dr. Paul A. Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather and Professor

of St. Paul, died on Sunday, October 21st. Preceded in death by parents Paul N. and Alice (Prescott) Schons. Survived by wife Nancy, children Mary, Paul D. (Susan) and Suzanne Schons (Dan Rosinski), six grandsons, Paul N., Joey, Zack and David Schons, Gabe and Colton Rosinski, brother Charles (Teri Lynn). Paul was born in Tracy, MN on Sept. 12, 1940. He received his BA degree in German from the College of St. Thomas, MA from the U of Colorado and PhD from the U of MN. For the past 45 years until his illness he taught German at the University of St. Thomas. Paul was a dynamic and innovative teacher. He taught the first on-line course at St. Thomas, had a wide variety of interests and created courses in German business and economics, philosophy and the German opera. His extensive web pages were accessed by individuals and institutions of learning world-wide. In 1974 he founded the study abroad program at St. Thomas and led numerous student groups to Germany. In 1977 the student body named him a “Teacher of the Year”. Paul was chair of his department for 15 years. He was the director of language and culture for the St. Thomas graduate program in international management for 20 years. He was a guest professor at the Universities of Leipzig, Paderborn and Freiberg, Germany. He lectured at Trier, Lippstadt and Malente, Germany. Dr. Schons was very active in the MN Association of Teachers of German, served as its president and edited the newsletter, and until his illness, edited the on-line newsletter and served as teacher placement director. He received national and state awards for his contributions to the Association. Paul wrote several books, authored numerous articles and presented papers at national conferences. He wrote over 100 articles on German history and culture for the newsletter of the Germanic American Institute of MN. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m, on Monday, October 29th at the CHURCH of ST. MARK, 2001 Dayton Ave., St. Paul, 55104. Visitation from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, October 28th at O’HALLORAN & MURPHY Snelling Avenue Chapel, 575 W. Snelling Ave. S., St. Paul, 55116, and one hour, on Monday, before the service at St. Mark’s. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. The Paul Schons Family Memorial Scholarship for German has been established at UST in Paul’s memory. Contributions may be made out to U of St. Thomas, (P.
